Sustainability for All

Sustainability has always been part of HOK’s ethos. But a little over a year ago, our Interiors group decided we needed to do more.

In this issue of HOK Forward, we describe how HOK's Interiors practice has expanded the definition of sustainable design to address human health, environmental sustainability and social equity in all our projects.

1. Call to Action: We begin by setting the stage and explaining exactly why we feel the need to accelerate our efforts to design more sustainable interior spaces. Did you know that the average person spends 90 percent of their time indoors? And that a typical office building's interior space is renovated every 10 years?

2. New Processes + Tools: Our Interiors group has launched new sustainable design tools and processes—and trained our people worldwide in their use. Here we tell the story of how we're aligning HOK's people, processes and tools to create healthy, sustainable interior spaces.

3. Health + Well-Being = Equity. Our collective experience over the past few years has highlighted the impact of the built environment on health and well-being. This has quickly moved from a nice-to-have to a need-to-have. In this chapter, HOK's designers describe strategies for healthy, equitable interior spaces.

4. Industry Collaboration: To truly support health, well-being and equity in interior spaces, designers must partner with product manufacturers and builders. Our team's work with Shaw Industries is an example worth emulating.

5. Norfolk Southern's Healthy HQ: Take a video tour of this forward-thinking company's new LEED Gold headquarters in Atlanta. The vertical campus accommodates the needs of 3,300 people while supporting healthy living and the community.

What else could our Interiors teams be doing to address health, climate change and equity? What are you doing? Is there an opportunity for us to share our knowledge and collaborate? We'd love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Tom Polucci
